About

This is the blog of the chair of continuous optimization at EPFL. Our focus is on nonconvex optimization, especially where it turns out to be tractable (sometimes after some tinkering). This brings us to consider problems with rich geometry and symmetry—Riemannian geometry comes up a lot.

From time to time, we run into neat facts, technical points or folklore-but-hard-to-find results. Some of these we share here. We may also use this blog to communicate about papers and events.

For brevity, some common mathematical notation (especially related to Riemannian geometry) is not re-defined in each post. Chances are it’s compatible with notation in my book about optimization on manifolds (the pdf is freely available; also video lectures and exercises).

The website is generated with Quarto, using the style Flatly. We hope you enjoy it.
